NCETC Thursday Conference Notes

Now That I Know Powerpoint How Can I Use It To Teach?

Patrick Crispen – Handouts from this session and other sessions
Google Image Search

* Make a white screen with black lettering and NO fancy animations when you are trying to get across “important” information

* Save Powerpoint as a .RTF which is making a skeletal outline of your Powerpoint:

- Go to File > Save

- In the “save as” type: pull-down list choose outline/RTF (*rtf)

* Quote from Patrick: “Have your students take their own notes during your Powerpoint presentation. Give your students a copy (or handout) of your presentation after class but before the test.”

Math + Technology = Learning!

Using Powerpoint and Excel in the math classroom

* make mini books using Powerpoint

* Translate: 1). open new Powerpoint 2) on blank screen type Name Ppt 3) New slide title Reflect Slide, use tools from tool bar to add shapes, click on shape and hold Ctrl key 4) hold and slide next to shape

* Rotation: 1) open new slide 2) insert autoshape (choose something other than circle) 3) hold Ctrl and translate next to shape 3) use green arrows to rotate figure

* Reflect: 1) open new slide 2) Ctrl and translate shape 3) on drawing tool bar (at bottom) choose flip

* Tessellations: Using all the skills from above to make tessellations

* Prove it: 1 = 1 = 12 (think sports, 1TD + 1 TD = 12 points), 1+ 1 = 50 (2 quarters), 1 + 1 = 120 (60 seconds)

* Excel Spreadsheets: good idea: highlight all the area where you are going to enter data and then start entering in 1st cell – you won’t have to drag your mouse, your computer will automatically start at the beginning – insert an Excel spreadsheet into Powerpoint and animate, do custom animation to gain a greater effect with the graph

* Tammy had too many great ideas for me to take notes. You probably want to purchase her books – think I’ll get a kickback for recommending this? You can order from her website.

* Power of the Penny: $1 million dollars or double a penny a day, column A is Day and Column B is Amount, enter 1, then 2, then 3, under days – highlight the boxes and then click and drag down to the ending date, – enter 0.01 in first amount row, convert entry to currency, enter formula of =B2*2, click and drag to bottom, then program will fill down for you, only drag down a few days to see if kids will change their minds, then drag a bit further and see if kids will change their minds, continue to bottom, but you get all the money, so do autosum at the end of the column, show break even part, change to what if it were a nickel or $1

* Algebra Challenge answer blocks change color when students enter the correct number, use conditional formatting

* To choose a winner, do a heads or tails toss, I’m going to try to find the program online, it’s online for Mac

* Great session – see Tammy whenever you have the opportunity! Buy her books! That’s the second plug, I’m still working on a kickback :-)

Reading and Writing Activities

Tammy Worcester

* Use spreadsheet to keep track of books that were read , make a graph/chart

* Using a Powerpoint, you can use the rectangle tools to hide letters in a sentence, the students guess the word and you can reveal letter by letter – good for younger students

* Book prediction: copy a cover of a book, using rectangle tools, cover the bookcover and reveal a piece of the picture while the kids guess the book and what the book is about

* Spreadsheet for publishing: use spreadsheet, can do in a variety of sizes, click file then page setup then adjust to 200% of normal size change margins to 1/2 inch, use zoom away to see more pages of your poster – you want to see 4 pages (about 35%), highlight the pages you want, using the drawing tools make a border and word art and use clip art, you can drag and enlarge your clip arts and word art, after you print you will have to tape together. Science fair posters, 4H posters, teacher posters, 2×2 posters are good for Big Books for lower level kids

* Super Sleuth: find information and copy text, go to editor and add a text box, put cursor inside text box and all your information will be inside, make font smaller, students read article and write short summary, use oval tool, insert somewhere inside your text, add another shape (circle) and add another, use fill color make 2 brown and 2 gray, make gray transparent – drag together to make a magnifying glass, add text to your magnifying glass

* I’m T-rrific Because: using a word processing program , type in I’m T-rrific Because about midway down the page, then under the title type in sentences as bullets why you are terrific, after you print it, fold in hot dog style, cut a half moon at top and rectangle from bottom on flap side leaving a couple of inches at the top, when you open it you have a T-shirt, thus the name I’m T-rrific because… Neat activity

* Make a small booklet: Using Powerpoint, put title on first page and invert, insert blank slide, on next slide, write a bogus book summary (kids do this before they read the book), on next slide write the real book summary, print out as 4 slides per page, fold hamburger, fold hot dog, cut off extra from the sides to form a booklet

* Findsounds.com Sounds for inserting into Powerpoint

I had to leave early so I could buy Tammy’s books :-)
