When I was a kid

Today is Halloween.  My favorite holiday of the year.  When I was a kid, I couldn’t wait until after supper so we could hit up all the neighborhood houses to get our loot.  As an adult, I live vicariously through all the little costumed gremlins that come to our house.  Luckily, hubby loves Halloween as much as I.  Every year, he decorates full tilt and normally, we even dress up.  Our church offers Trunk or Treat during Awana before Halloween.  Like any good parent of furry kids, we dress the girls up and let them sit in the trunk while I give out candy.  They love it (so many kids to pet them), the kids love it (”look at the BIG dog, momma!”), and we love it.

I was so excited tonight to know that we would be seeing so many costumes and happy kids.  But, I have been very disappointed.  We have had very few kids this year.  Last year, we were swamped with kids.  So much so, that I was afraid that I was going to run out of candy (I didn’t).  Like a good Hallowitch, I bought extra this year.  Bad move.  I still have 3 bags that haven’t even been opened and a full cauldron just waiting for goblins to threaten Trick or Treat.

I can remember mom and dad dividing up my candy after a long night of “begging”.  There was my stack, mom’s favorites, dad’s group, and the one that didn’t look quite safe.  It seems like we ate on that candy for weeks.

So, my question.  Where are all the kids this year? I pray that the world hasn’t become such a terrible place that parents aren’t allowing their kids out on Halloween.  When I was a kid, it was the best night of the year.

Until next time ~ Danita
