You tube, I tube, we tube

Ok, we had “the discussion” this afternoon. The conversation of what should/should not be included in acceptable use policy. Also, what websites we thought were appropriate. Of course, YouTube was at the top of the list.

I understand that allowing student’s free reign to YouTube probably isn’t a good idea, but I also believe that teachers should be able to show videos from there. I have an account where I have saved educational videos that the teachers would love to show in their room. It’s difficult to find good math videos, but there are several on YouTube.

Two hours later, we still hadn’t come to a consensus. So, my question to you, what do you allow and why or why not? Does your county/school district have an acceptable use policy? I’d love to know.

Until next time ~ Danita

We are a private school, but we do not restrict it or block it. However, the necessary software to run it as been removed from the computers. The kind that comes with them, like Flash and something else. Some have gotten it put back on….

Hopefully, although it is difficult, there will be many more “discussions”. My hope is that through education and understanding we’ll begin to come around as a system! Great examples of effective use are the key! I hope you get lots of comments on this post, so we can again join the conversation and provide feedback about how others are handling this new territory!

I think video sites make sense to think about, and to use appropriately at school, and I know that raises problems for some administrators who are worried about bandwidth issues.
I really hope that your policy deals in broad strokes and not in specific applications or websites. (I’m sure it doesn’t/won’t.) I’d hate to see you craft a policy that you like that is absolutely useless is six months because the online landscape’s changed.
